I've been working with this setup on my HTPC now, and I have to say it's a great solution. The absolute pointing in X is really intuitive, the fact that the WiiMote works over bluetooth makes pointing at a receiver, like you have to do with IR-based remotes, superfluous, and the fact that I can randomly pick the WiiMote I can reach best is icing on the cake.
The combination with Mame is even more fun: a lot of games are made to be enjoyed with 2 players in co-op mode, and are just as enjoyable with a friend, lounging on the couch with a beer.
Disclaimer: It probably isn't legal to download and use Mame roms; you should dump them from the arcade machines you own. I do not know where you can get them otherwise, please don't ask. No arcade game manufacturers were harmed in the making of this article.
10 commentsI maintained the patch over a year now and for a few months I tried to got it upstream. It should be now included in MAME 0.146u4. Thank you to the initial author of the patch for the inspiration and thanks to the MAME development team for the integration.
The IR LED from a remote control may not be ideal - since the wiimote may have intermittent/jumpy tracking due to IR LED pulse action (see Johnny Lee wiimote projects) - they recommend a specific type of static state IR LED for optimum results
Hi, I could update the patch for the latest mame 0.142, I leave the link in case anyone wants it. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SPZB23L9
Hi, I tried your settings to have 2 wiimote as a gun and I have worked very well in gnome, but I had problems with mame, since I downloaded the latest patch versionof 0137 I have compiled but mame does not recognize me as the wiimote gun control but as this proved the last patch, or need something to describe. I\'ve tried in Operation Wolf and Terminator 2, not whether they will be compatible. If you\'re not too much trouble could you update the latest patch for the 0141 version? Thank you very much.
Updated patch is downloadable at page 3.
Any chance of an updated patch for SDLMAME 0.137? Thanks, cesman
Did you have top keep the ir led on your wall in your final setup ?
Awesome guide, I will give this a go asap. I have a Wii and play all the Shooters on it (very xcite time) mostly Resident Evil(s) and HOTD Overkill. Wouldn\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t mind playing old House of the Dead, Carnevil, Lethal Enforcers etc. on MAME with a projector as well.
A Multi-Pointer aware X server should make this easier, I think the latest version supports it.
This seems to be a cool project. I worked with parts of it (namely the dual wiimote on startup setup) to get two wiimotes working as gamecontrollers (for usage with an emulation station for the RasPi). What I don't quite get is how you got wminput to create two separate event files in /dev/input/, when I'm connecting the wiimotes they don't register as separate devices and just generate mouse events. Do you perchance know how to get the wiimotes to register as if I'd use 2 regular USB Gamepads (I don't even care about the accelerator data, I just want the buttons und the analog stick of the nunchuck working)?
